Monsters Inc. Land: What we know so far.

Monsters Inc. is coming to Disney World’s Hollywood Studios!

Humans are being welcomed into Monstropolis for the first time in this brand-new land.

There has been no official opening date announced just yet, but construction is said to start this year, and with it being such a huge project, we can expect it to take at least two to three years to complete.

Location

Monstropolis will be replacing Grand Avenue which was previously called Muppets Courtyard. So we’ll be saying goodbye to Muppet*Vision 3D, PizzaRizzo and Mama Melrose’s.

Update: Muppet*Vision 3D closed permanently on June 7, 2025.

Layout

Disney has released concept art that gives us an idea of what we can expect with the new land.

However, it’s always good to remember that things can change throughout each phase of development, so what we see here might not be the final outcome.

Still, it’s fun to look at the concept art and to guess what each building could be.

One thing we do know is that the Monsters Inc. building, which you can see in the concept art below, will be home to an exciting new attraction, which I’ll talk more about later.

To the left in the concept art, we can see what looks like a Sully-themed slide, so potentially we could have a children’s play area here.

Rides and Attractions

It’s time to talk about one of the most exciting and anticipated parts of this new land. Monstropolis will have Disney’s first-ever suspended coaster!

The coaster will be inspired by the door scene in Monsters Inc., and like the movie, you’ll be lifted into the air and zoom through the door vault just like Mike, Sully and Boo did!

In the video below, you can see how the vertical lift for the new attraction will work. You’ll be loaded into the ride seat and then lifted vertically in the air.

Disney have also announced that Monsters Inc. Land will feature a new theatre show. In the concept art, we see something called Monstro, where Muppet*Vision 3D used to be, so it’s likely this could be the location for the new theatre show.

Update (12/06/2025): When Muppets Courtyard was closed, new concept art for Monstropolis was placed on the privacy wall. This concept art included a couple of changes.

The biggest change is that Monstro Theatre is now called The Glob, and the theatre’s design has undergone some slight alterations. In fact, the majority of the changes are to the building designs.

It also seems like the Miss Piggy fountain will be staying, although Miss Piggy will presumably be replaced by something more monstrous!

Dining & Shopping

At the D23 event, Disney announced that there would be dining and shopping coming to Montropolis, but hasn’t given any specific details yet.

However, one thing that is noticeable in the concept art is Harryhausen’s, the Japanese restaurant that appears in the Monsters Inc. movie.

So it’s possible that this will be a restaurant, especially since it’s located where Mama Melrose’s used to be.

It’s also likely that there’ll be another dining option, especially since they’ll have the space PizzaRizzo’s used to occupy, but we’ll have to wait for Disney to announce more details before we find out what it’ll be!
