Is Escape From Gringotts Scary? A Guide for Nervous Riders

We love visiting the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando Resort. There’s just one problem – I can often feel anxious before some rides, especially when trying new ones!

Doing some research ahead of time helps me feel more prepared and really makes a difference. I also find it more helpful to hear opinions from other nervous riders than from someone who loves roller coasters and says it’s not scary!

If that sounds like you, I hope this guide will help you too!

So, is Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts scary? Here’s my perspective as a nervous rider!

Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts

Universal Orlando Resort is home to three big theme parks and a water park.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter stretches across all three parks: Universal Studios, Universal Islands of Adventure, and Universal Epic Universe.

If you want to ride Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts, you’ll need a ticket for Universal Studios, as it is located in Diagon Alley.

Wizarding World Tip: If you want to explore everything the Wizarding World of Harry Potter has to offer, you will need a ticket for each park. To ride the Hogwarts Express between Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure, you must have a park-to-park ticket.

Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts is the only Harry Potter ride at the Universal Studios park.

You’ll find Gringotts tucked among the colourful shops and cobbled streets of Diagon Alley. Just look for the fire-breathing dragon on top of Gringotts Bank – it’s hard to miss!

Before I even step inside Gringotts Bank, there’s one part of this ride I’m not a fan of – the lockers. You’ll need to store all your belongings before heading inside.

If the area is quiet, it’s usually quick and easy. But when it gets busy, the crowds and tight spaces can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re not a fan of small spaces. The upside is that the lockers are free while you’re on the ride.

The Elevator to the Vaults

When you head into Gringott’s, there are lots of fun details to spot. After passing through the offices, you’ll arrive at the elevator that takes you down to the Gringott vaults.

If elevators make you nervous, there’s no need to worry, as it isn’t a real elevator. It doesn’t actually move, so you stay stationary the entire time.

While you wait for the elevator, a Gringotts goblin warns you about the ride ahead. He says it’s “not for everyone” and calls it a “high-speed roller coaster ride with sudden and dramatic acceleration, climbing, stopping and diving. Even some of the magical community find the ride a bit challenging”.

If you’re already feeling nervous, hearing this doesn’t make it any easier! Just be ready to hear about how intense the ride is while you’re in line.

The elevator ride is part of the immersive experience, something Escape From Gringotts does very well. It is designed to make you feel like you’re heading deep underground to the vaults where the minecarts wait.

Special effects help create this illusion, including screens that show your descent, shaking floors, sound effects, and a gentle breeze. If you’ve experienced The Haunted Mansion at Magic Kingdom, it will feel familiar, but with a few extra touches.

The only real concern is if you get claustrophobic. From my experience, the elevator is usually not crowded, and it’s a fun way to pass some time while you wait. I don’t like how packed the elevator gets in The Haunted Mansion, but I haven’t had that problem with Gringotts.

If you’re okay with a few spoilers, you can check out this video of the elevator ride to get a feel for what it’s like.

Is Escape from Gringotts a roller coaster?

Yes, the ride is technically an indoor steel roller coaster, but it’s quite different from what you might expect when you hear the word “roller coaster”. Instead of the usual twists and turns, this ride uses 3D technology and large screens to create a truly immersive experience.

Instead of sharp dips and turns, the track moves you from one screen to the next. The ride is smooth overall, and apart from the first drop (see below), you won’t get that stomach-dropping sensation you might expect from a traditional coaster.

Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts Drop

I’ve always found the drops on rides to be the scariest part. That sinking feeling in your stomach just isn’t for me.

Escape from Gringotts has just one drop, and it happens right at the start. After you’re seated, the cart moves away from the loading area and then stops. The track tilts forward at about a 45-degree angle, holding you in place as you look down into the darkness ahead, where the track disappears. It’s a suspenseful moment, since you don’t know exactly when the drop will happen.

So, exactly how high is the drop? Universal doesn’t share exact numbers, but most people say it’s about 20 to 30 feet. The cart is already tilted, so gravity takes over, and the drop is done before you know it.

It’s my least favourite part, but honestly, it’s not too high or too steep. I still ride every time I visit because the rest of the ride is worth it, and the drop is bearable and over at the beginning!

Nervous Rider Tip: If you can get a seat at the front of the cart, the drop is less intense. This is because the drop is much shorter from the front.

I came across a YouTube video of the ride with the lights on, and I brightened it up so you can get a clear look at the drop. As you can see, it’s really not that high, espcecially at the front of the cart. You can also watch the full video below.

The Escape From Gringotts drop

The drop on Escape From Gringotts is much tamer than the big roller coasters at Universal Orlando. It isn’t as steep or as high, which is great news if you’re nervous about drops. Even better, this is the only drop on the ride. Once it’s done, you can sit back and enjoy the rest of the ride!

If you want to see for yourself, you can watch the full lights on video below. To see only the drop, skip to 20 seconds.

There is one more thing to mention. There is a simulated drop where your cart stays still, but the screens make it look like you’re falling.

I find this part easy to handle because you know it isn’t real. If you close your eyes, you won’t even notice! If you’ve been on the Spider-Man ride, it’s similar to the moment when you fall from the top of a building using screens.

Does the Escape From Gringotts ride spin?

The ride does spin occasionally, but it never feels too intense. I’m usually sensitive to spinning rides and can get motion sickness, but I have no trouble on Gringotts.

It’s not too fast, and the spinning is brief rather than constant. The minecarts are also pretty big, so you don’t feel it as much. If you’ve ridden Men in Black, Gringotts is much milder by comparison.

Does Escape From Gringotts Cause Motion Sickness?

You’ll pick up a pair of 3D glasses on your way to the cart to get ready for the 3D experience. If you’re prone to motion sickness on simulator rides that use this kind of technology, then there’s a possibility you’ll get it here too.

The ride uses screens to create a sense of movement, but in my experience, it’s not as intense as some other screen-based rides. Of course, everyone is different, but I’ve never had any trouble with this one.

There’s also a little bit of spinning during the ride, as I mentioned above!

Does the Rollercoaster go Upside Down?

Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts does not go upside down or have any loops, so you do not need to worry about that on this ride.

Is the Ride Suitable for Children?

If you have children who want to ride Escape from Gringotts, the height restriction is 107cm.

Obviously, every child is different, but because the ride is so immersive, some children might find the content a bit scary. You’ll face characters like Voldemort, Nagini, and Bellatrix on screen in 3D, and the story creates a sense of danger as you go along. The ride is also very dark as you move from one screen to the next.

The mine cart moves in short, quick bursts from one screen to the next. However, it often pauses to watch the scenes on screens rather than maintaining a fast pace.

Is Escape From Gringotts Scary?

Everyone’s experience will be different, but for me, Escape from Gringotts is one of my favourite rides at Universal.

I skip the bigger rides because the drops scare me. I’d love to try Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, but I haven’t been brave enough yet! Compared to other roller coasters in the park, Escape from Gringotts is much less intense.

The only part that makes me a bit nervous is the small drop at the beginning, but it’s manageable and over quickly.

It doesn’t have the big dips or maintain the speed of a traditional rollercoaster. While it does pick up speed at times, a lot of time is also spent stationary, watching scenes on the screens.

Even if you’re not a Harry Potter fan, Escape from Gringotts is still a great experience. It’s actually one of the main reasons I love visiting Universal Orlando!
