Have you ever wondered how many Disney parks around the world there are?
The first Disney park opened in Anaheim, California, on July 17th, 1955. The development was overseen by Walt Disney, who had imagined a place where parents and their children could have fun together while watching his own daughters on a merry-go-round. Walt Disney died in 1966, but Disney has since grown by five more resorts.
How many Disney Parks are there?
There are a total of six Disney resorts which contain twelve Disney parks around the world.

There are also three Disney resorts that do not have theme parks: Disney’s Vero Beach Resort in Florida, Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort in South Carolina and Disney’s Aulani Resort in Hawaii.

The twelve Disney parks span four countries – the USA, France, China and Japan.
Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida
Walt Disney World opened in Orlando, Florida, in 1971. It includes four theme parks, two water parks, Disney Springs and various hotels and resorts.
Magic Kingdom is one of the most popular Disney parks, known for its iconic Cinderella castle. It has six themed lands: Main Street U.S.A., Adventureland, Frontierland, Liberty Square, Fantasyland, and Tomorrowland. As well as popular rides such as Haunted Mansion and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, there are also parades and a magical nighttime firework show above the castle.
EPCOT has four neighborhoods: World Celebration, World Nature, World Discovery and World Showcase. The neighborhoods celebrate the earth through nature, science, technology and its people. You can travel the world in World Showcase and visit eleven pavilions based on eleven nations.
Hollywood Studios is inspired by all things show business! Here you will find seven themed areas: Hollywood Boulevard, Echo Lake, Grand Avenue, Animation Courtyard, Sunset Boulevard, Toy Story Land and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.
Animal Kingdom is part theme park and part zoo. It has six themed sections: The Oasis, Discovery Island, DinoLand U.S.A., Africa, Asia and Pandora: The World of Avatar. As well as rides like Kali River Rapids and Expedition Everest, there are plenty of animals to see, such as tigers and gorillas.
The Disney water parks, Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach are both themed water parks with slides, lazy rivers and wave pools.
Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California
Disneyland was the first park to be opened by Walt Disney on July 17, 1955, in Anaheim, California. In 2001, the park saw an expansion with the addition of Disney California Adventure Park and Downtown Disney.
Disneyland Park has nine themed lands: Main Street U.S.A., Adventureland, Frontierland, New Orleans Square, Critter Country, Fantasyland, Mickey’s Toontown, Tomorrowland and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.
Disney California Adventure Park opened in 2001 and has had a number of expansions. The park has eight themed sections: Buena Vista Street, Grizzly Peak, Paradise Gardens, Pacific Wharf, Hollywood Land, Avengers Campus, Pixar Pier and Cars Land.
Disneyland Paris in Chessy, France
Euro Disney was opened in 1992. Ten years later, in 2002, Disney added a second theme park, Walt Disney Studios Park, and it was officially renamed Disneyland Paris. Disneyland Paris also has seven hotels, a golf course, and entertainment and shopping in Disney Village. It is the largest Disney park outside of the United States.
Disneyland Park is similar to Disneyland in California and Magic Kingdom in Florida. They all centre around a castle (Sleeping Beauty’s castle in Paris) and feature some of the same rides, such as Big Thunder Mountain and Pirates of the Caribbean.
Walt Disney Studios was originally themed around show business and film production, similar to Hollywood Studios in Orlando. It has five studio lots: Front Lot, Toon Studio, Worlds of Pixar, Production Courtyard and Marvel Avengers Campus.
Tokyo Disney Resort in Urayasu, Chiba, Japan
Tokyo Disney opened on April 15, 1983, in Chiba, Japan. It was extended in 2001 when they added a second park, Tokyo DisneySea. The resort is operated by The Oriental Land Company and has multiple hotels and a shopping complex.
Tokyo Disney is similar to Disneyland and Magic Kingdom in Orlando, with similar theming and attractions. The park has seven themed areas: World Bazaar, Adventureland, Westernland, Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, Critter Country and Mickey’s Toontown.
Tokyo DisneySea’s theme is nautical exploration, and it has seven ports of call: Mediterranean Harbor, Port Discovery, American Waterfront, Lost River Delta, Mermaid Lagoon, Arabian Coast, and Mysterious Island.
Hong Kong Disneyland Resort in Penny’s Bay, Lantau Island, China
Hong Kong Disneyland opened in 2005 and is Hong Kong’s largest theme park. The park is a collaboration between the Government of Hong Kong and The Walt Disney Company and incorporates Chinese culture and traditions, including following feng shui rules.
Hong Disneyland is a single park with seven themed areas: Main Street U.S.A., Fantasyland, Adventureland, Tomorrowland, Grizzly Gulch, Mystic Point and Toy Story Land.
Shanghai Disney Resort in Pudong, Shanghai, China
Shanghai Disney Resort is Disney’s newest theme park and opened in 2016. Shanghai Disneyland is similar to other Disneyland parks but was specifically designed for Chinese guests. Bob Iger referred to it as “‘authentically Disney, distinctly Chinese”. This park has the tallest castle, and rather than focusing on a singular Princess, Enchanted Storybook Castle represents all Disney princesses.
The resort also has hotels and an entertainment district, Disneytown, where you can find dining and shopping. Disneytown is also home to The Walt Disney Grand Theatre.
Shanghai Disneyland has seven themed areas; Mickey Avenue, Gardens of Imagination, Fantasyland, Adventure Isle, Treasure Cove, Tomorrowland and Toy Story Land.
